Indie gospel singer & songwriter Angela Bryant-Brown, a diva for God
~By Regina Pinder-Smith
The angelic voice of independent gospel recording artist, speaker and songwriter Angela Bryant-Brown captivates the hearts and souls of Christians and non-Christians alike. During her interview with BeautyFashionForward.com, Angela revealed a strong, but humble spirit deep-rooted in her faith. She identified her genre as “praise & worship” music, as she explained how she shares the good news of gospel with the world through her work in Christian music ministry, grass-roots teen activism, blog talk radio ministry and small business support services.
A native Syracuse, New Yorker who now resides in Virginia, Angela Bryant-Brown began singing at the tender age of 7. She, her mom and sister performed as a trio- “The Bryant Trio.” Their music was more traditional than Angela’s current style, and they sang music recorded by the Heritage Singers and the Blend Wrights.
Now a wife and mother of two, Angela has opened for the gospel group “Witness,” shared the stage with Christian recording artists Byron Cage and John Stoddart and appeared on Cornerstone TV and the 3ABN “Today” talk show. She also performs at worship services, retreats, weddings and solo concerts. Her children sing as well. Her son is a beat producer, and her husband Earl A. Brown is supportive of all of their endeavors.
Angela Bryant-Brown has also authored her first book for Christian artists, which is scheduled for release in 2015, and she aspires to host a talk show for women by women of faith.
“My rule is to sing songs that don’t compromise my spiritual principles and beliefs.”
When asked if she always sang gospel music, Angela replied, “For the most part. My mom didn’t allow me or my siblings to listen to secular music. Once an adult, I dabbled in some secular favorites by Whitney Houston, Lala Hathaway and jazz greats, such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. My rule is to sing songs that don’t compromise my spiritual principles and beliefs.”
Angela says the late, gospel and popular singing sensation, Whitney Houston, influences her vocal style the most, hands down. A few other gospel performers who inspire her are Pastor Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, and Sandi Patty.
“The lyrics and melody arrangement just takes me into God’s presence,” Angela exclaimed, “It reminds me of His Awesomeness, glory, and power! He is faithful even when I am not. Thank you Jesus!”, she continued.
“Gina (my favorite background vocalist) and I cried so many times trying to get through the recording. There was so much intimacy between us and God.” Angela shared, “His presence was thick in the studio…we worshipped. Glory Hallelujah!”
In 2005, Angela established her record label ministry, Sounds 4 the Soul, to provide uplifting, inspirational music and spoken word for her listeners. In 2006, she founded the non-profit organization, By Your Side Ministries, Inc. (BYSM) to provide support to single-teen parents, their dependents, and other at-risk youth.
When asked how her gospel ministry relates to her non-profit endeavors, Angela replied:
“They both focus on service. God called all believers to serve Him and mankind. Through music, I serve Him by spreading the good news of salvation, and through BYSM, I serve disadvantaged young mothers by bringing them a message of hope and purpose. Both ministries aim to break the cycles and chains in people’s lives; for, in Christ there is liberty…freedom to live…freedom to enjoy the gift of redemption that only Christ can provide.”
Angela says she established By Your Side Ministries, Inc. out of her desire to help each of her young, disadvantaged, unwed female parent participants to discover, embrace and pursue their life’s purpose.
“I, too, was a young unwed mother,” Angela revealed, “But, by the grace of God, I was able to complete higher education and successfully secure lucrative salaried positions. But, none of that would have been possible, if it weren’t for the help and support of other people God placed in my life. With them by my side, I was able to stay the course and complete that leg of my life’s journey. For that reason, By Your Side Ministries was born.”
Angela also supports World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization that works with impoverished children, families, and communities. Her ReverbNation web page donates fifty percent of sales to World Vision and has sponsored two girls over the past six years.
In 2009, Angela launched a blog talk radio ministry, “Life Happens: So what are you going to do about it?” to help her listeners to discover how to apply bible life-application principles to overcome obstacles in daily life.
Then, in 2013, Angela launched BF3 Associates LLC, in the Washington, DC metropolitan area to offer business support in contract administration, program/project management, solicitations review and corporate event planning services.
Since the word “gospel” derives from the Old English word gōd-spell and the Greek word euangelion, which both mean good news, we asked Angela to share her favorite Bible verse, what good news she makes a special effort to impart via her music ministry and what legacy she would like to leave her children and the world.
“My favorite Bible scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6:
‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.’
The good news I make a special effort to impart via my music ministry is that Jesus is Lord of all, and He died so that all can live now and in the life to come. Not only that, but He also has a plan and divine purpose for each of us that only we can fulfill. So, walk confidently in your faith by grasping hold of His gift to you and live abundantly!”
“Only what you do for Christ will last is what I truly believe…I would like to leave a legacy of devotion to Christ that is manifested in everything I do and say…a loyal follower of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. In other words, I want to be known as a woman who fulfilled her Divine purpose uncompromised.”
BeautyFashionForward.com has officially christened Angela Bryant-Brown: “A Diva for God!” For the record, her mission is pure. Her voice is heavenly. Her fashion sense is classic and her makeup is flawless!
